Becky interviews Ethan Diaz, pro wrestler and proprietor of Destiny City Comics. He gives some recommendations for readers of different ages and interests, talks about his foray into being a small business owner, previews some aspirations for Destiny City Comics, and speaks about the richness, collaboration, and mutual support of the local artist community.

WASHINGTON STATE

  • All driver licensing offices are now temporarily closed to the public, state-wide.
    • Persons under age 24 and over 70 may now renew online for at least the next 30 days
    • The Department of Licensing is also suspending the requirement to visit a licensing office every other renewal
    • Mail-in options are available for vehicle registration, original title transactions, and driver’s license renewal.
    • Customers who want an ID that complies with the Federal REAL ID Act will have an opportunity to apply at a later date, as that deadline has been extended.
  • The Governor’s office has created an online form to report businesses violating the stay-home order.
    • If a nonessential business is found to be operating in violation of the governor’s emergency order, the first step will be a warning from local law enforcement
    • The second step may involve citations, suspensions of permits or even revocations of business licenses
    • Businesses still refusing to comply may be referred to the state attorney general’s office for civil or criminal charges
    • Landlords who try to kick out tenants in violation of the current moratorium on evictions will face legal action by the state, and may be reported using the online form found at https://coronavirus.wa.gov in the blue box at the top, or by contacting the state attorney general’s office by calling (253) 593-5243.

TACOMA

  • The Tacoma Urban League is partnering with rideshare service Lyft to provide rides to essential work sites and grocery stores while transit services are reduced. Go to TheTacomaUrbanLeague.org or call (253) 383-2007
  • Tacoma City Mayor and Tacoma Police Chief Don Ramsdell are directing residents not to call 911 to report social distancing violations or people being outside; reserve 911 for people who need immediate emergency assistance.
    • When officers encounter someone who is not complying with the governor’s Stay Home, Stay Healthy order, they will remind them of the restrictions in place, but will not be actively seeking out individuals failing to comply with the order.
  • Tacoma Public Schools will be providing laptops to students without home access to one.
    • Distribution will occur through April 7th.
    • high school seniors and A.P. students may pick up starting on April 1
    • Students in Grades 9, 10, and 11 may pick up starting April 2
    • Middle schoolers may pick up starting April 3
    • Elementary school students may pick up starting April 6th.
    • No distribution will occur on the weekend
    • The pickup locations are Mount Tahoma High School, at 4634 S. 74th St.and the Professional Development Center (or the PDC) at 6501 N 23rd St
    • Sites will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with social distancing measures in place
    • Each student who needs a device may receive a laptop. Bring their student ID number.
    • If you feel ill, do not come.
    • The Tacoma Urban League is providing free rides to laptop pickup locations: In the Lyft app, navigate to PROMOS and enter the code URBANLEAGUETPS20. The credit will only work with designated locations March 31-April 7th.

PIERCE COUNTY

  • The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department states that there is a lag in reporting confirmed COVID-19 cases due to the state system being overwhelmed, but testing continues uninterrupted. As of March 28, the UW Virology Lab, healthcare providers, and private labs have tested 5,299 Pierce County residents.
