Roxanne Miles explains how Pierce County Parks and MetroParks Tacoma are facilitating safe, outdoor social programs for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities through the “Meet Me In The Park” program. Interview begins at 8:01

GENERAL

  • The US Forest Service is warning that vehicles parked illegally at trailheads are at risk of being towed.
    • Federal and state agencies advise visiting parks during weekdays instead of weekends, and to come with backup plans or go home if parking lots are full.
    • Additionally, the state Department of Natural Resources says volunteer cleanup crews are smaller this year because of the pandemic, and urges everyone to pack out their trash when using trails and campsites.
    • Additionally, the department asks that hikers stick to established trails to protect wildlands, and not to build new trails.
  • Uber is asking all users of its rideshare service to remember three words: Wash, Wear, Air.

PIERCE COUNTY

  • This Saturday, a free, drive-in screening of “The Goonies” will be shown at the Washington State Fairground’s Blue lot.
    • Gates open at 7:30pm and entry is on a first-come basis until the 500-vehicle capacity is reached.
    • Attendees are asked to bring a nonperishable donation for the the Puyallup food bank.
    • Vehicles will be parked 10 feet apart, and masks must be worn by anyone exiting their vehicles.

  • Tacoma’s City Council meeting will take place virtually tomorrow at 5pm.
    • It will be broadcast on TV Tacoma and streamed on the city’s facebook live and at TVTacoma.com.
  • Tacoma Public Schools students in grades 6 to 12 will be able to check out laptops from their school prior to the first day of school.
    • Families should look for emails or other notifications from their specific middle or high school for the distribution schedule with assigned time slots.
    • Laptops for students in kindergarten to 5th grade will be available after the start of the school year as supplies arrive.

  • Free and reduced-price meal applications now open for students enrolled in school.
  • Children who got free school lunches last year in any district could qualify for up to $399 per child as part of Pandemic EBT
    • Apply by August 31st to WashingtonConnection.org
    • Those who receive EBT benefits already received this additional assistance automatically.
  • Former customers of the internet service provider Advanced Stream have until tomorrow, August 18th, to set up service with another provider to avoid interruption of internet services.

    • All events run from 9:30 am to at least 3pm, no ID is required, and tests are free and open to anyone regardless of symptoms.
