5/25: Memorial Day Update

It is Memorial Day, no interview today!

STATE

  • Twenty-one of the the state’s 39 counties have been given clearance to move to Phase 2 of reopening.
    • Nearby Kitsap and Thurton counties are eligible to apply for a variance but have not completed all steps for approval.
    • Pierce and King Counties remain in Phase 1.
    • Counties must have an average of less than 10 new cases per 100,000 residents over a 14-day period. Pierce County will need to have fewer than 90 cases over a 14-day period to qualify.
  • The governor has requested that federal government extend the current Washington State National Guard mission responding to the COVID-19 through July 31st.
    • Active guard members have supported Community Based Testing Sites, built testing kits, received training in confidential contact tracing efforts, and assisted with food bank distribution support.

TACOMA

  • Free testing for active coronavirus infection continues this week at the Tacoma Dome 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
  • The Tacoma Public Schools invites community members to record short messages of encouragement for the graduating class of 2020, and share them to social media with the hashtag #TPSGrad20.
    • The school district is also hosting free online training this week for families wanting to know more about the applications students are using for distance learning. More info found attacomaschools.org/ci/optional.
  • MetroParks Tacoma has opened the Point Defiance Marina and Meadow Park Golf Course with limited services, and social distancing measures in place.
    • At the Marina, lifts are open 6 am – 8 pm, the boat launch is open daily, parking is open at Anthony’s or the multipurpose lots, and gas is available for vessels. Merchandise sales and restroom access remains limited, and boat rentals and pier fishing are still suspended.
    • MetroParks is also seeking input on what services and recreation programs should be prioritized as they develop recovery planning.
